Tim Horton gives three world premieres in solo recital at Presteigne Festival

Tim Horton looks forward to giving a solo piano recital at this year’s Presteigne Festival on Tuesday 30th August at 2pm, including three world premieres.

The programme begins and ends with contrasting sets of piano works – Schönberg’s Six Little Pieces are expressionistic miniatures in the composer’s early atonal style, while Schubert’s Drei Klavierstücke are more substantial works written near the end of his life, and are thought to be three of an intended further set of four impromptus (to add to the two sets he had already composed).

The centre of the programme is made up of four works by living composers, beginning with Julian Philips’s Barcarola, composed in 2019. The following three works have been commissioned from three leading living composers specially for this concert in memory of British composer Hugh Wood, a great friend and supporter of the Presteigne Festival, who passed away last summer.

The resulting triptych is entitled ‘Homages to Hugh Wood’ — comprising Cantilena by Thomas Hyde, A Fugue for Hugh by David Matthews, and A Sort of Rainbow by Francis Pott — and Tim is honoured to have been asked to give the premiere performances of these very special works.

Tickets for the concert are available via the Presteigne Festival website.
