BBC R3 Record Review has high praise for Linos Piano Trio

The Linos Piano Trio‘s recording of Ravel’s Piano Trio in A minor from their recent album ‘In Search of Lost Dance’ received high praise from Andrew McGregor and Colin Currie on BBC Radio 3 Record Review on Saturday 1st July.

During their conversation, Currie called Linos’s performance “utterly captivating and believable, and very intimate”, going on to commend the “fantastic balance and incredible colouristic qualities of the music, which are so important in Ravel”. After playing Linos’s recording of the Finale from the Trio, both commentators were quick to highlight Linos’s use of ‘period’ instruments, noting how pianist Prach Boondiskulchok plays a 1882 Érard piano very similar to the one Ravel had in his front room, and observing how it “balances so exquisitely with the strings”.

The programme is available to listen again until the end of July, and can be found via this link, with the segment starting at 37:28 and the musical excerpt from 39:24.

‘In Search of Lost Dance’ presents the music of Ravel in a fascinating light, with the Linos Piano Trio performing on early-twentieth century period instruments and exploring Ravel’s own relationship with the past.

As well as Ravel’s iconic Piano Trio in A minor, the disc also features Linos’s own arrangements of his Pavane pour une infante défunte and Le Tombeau de Couperin — an extension of their ‘Stolen Music’ project, in which the Linos players collaboratively re-imagines orchestral masterpieces as if they had been initially conceived for Piano Trio.

The disc was released digitally on 7th April by Cavi Music in partnership with German public broadcaster SWR.
