The highly-acclaimed Wihan Quartet will tour the UK this spring, with concerts in Derbyshire, Kent, Essex and Berkshire.
Praised by the New York Times for possessing a sound that is “deeply pleasurable and also deeply traditional” and having been called “one of the world’s finest chamber ensembles” by BBC Music Magazine, the Wihan Quartet is one of the leading string quartets to emerge from the great Czech school of performance in recent years.
Their interpretation of the Czech domestic repertoire and beyond is respected internationally, and audiences in the UK will have an opportunity to hear them perform masterpieces of the string quartet canon across four concerts this month.
On March 20th, Matlock Music Society presents the quartet in a performance of Schubert’s Quartettsatz in C minor, D. 703, Dvořák’s Quartet no. 9 in D minor, op. 34 and Beethoven’s Quartet no. 9 in C major, op. 59, no. 3, Rasumovsky. The following day, the quartet appear at the Sevenoaks Music Club, performing works by Haydn, Dvořák and Beethoven. On 22nd March, the quartet will perform Mozart’s String Quartet no. 8 in F major, K. 168, Smetana’s Quartet no. 2 in D minor and Schubert’s Quartet in D minor, D. 810 – Death and the Maiden for Stour Valley Arts and Music. For the final concert of their tour, they perform quartets by Mozart, Smetana and Schubert for the Maidenhead Music Society.
