The Wihan Quartet look forward to returning to the UK to perform at the Lake District Summer Music Festival this August.
One of the leading string quartets to emerge from the great Czech school of performance in recent years, the Wihan Quartet has been called “one of the world’s finest chamber ensembles” by BBC Music Magazine, and are pleased to bring their charismatic interpretations of the Czech quartet repertoire to this year’s festival.
Established in 1985, the festival takes place annually in the heart of the Lake District, and presents world-renowned artists, emerging musicians and a wide variety of music to its audiences. On 2nd August, the quartet will give a concert of works by Czech composers, each of whom represents a profound contribution to the quartet repertoire. The programme begins with Janáček’s String Quartet no.1, The Kreutzer Sonata, followed by Smetana’s Quartet no.1 in E minor, From My Life, and closes with Dvořák’s Quartet no.10 in E flat, op.51, Slavonic.
The following day, the quartet appear alongside Trio Bohémo and double bassist Marcelo Rodrigues in ‘Czech Mates’, a programme that features some of Dvořák’s most enduring chamber works. On 4th August, they will offer a public masterclass with the Nadejda and Resol String Quartets, the festival’s resident emerging artists, on works by Grieg and Haydn.
