Trio Meister Raro, the Tashmina roster’s newly formed clarinet-viola-piano trio, gives its debut performances today in Sheffield for Music in the Round.
Comprised of Tashmina Artists Robert Plane (clarinet), Rachel Roberts (viola) and Tim Horton (piano), Trio Meister Raro was formed this year as a natural extension of their work together as members of Ensemble 360. The Trio draws its name from one of the aliases Schumann coined to describe different sides of his creative mind, with ‘Meister Raro’ representing the mature, observant, nurturing part of his personality.
Whilst Rob, Rachel and Tim have already explored works for the mellow combination of clarinet, viola and piano as part of Ensemble 360’s residency in Sheffield, becoming an autonomous ensemble has allowed them to delve deeper into a rewarding selection of acknowledged masterpieces and fascinating curiosities. Much of the ensemble’s repertoire, from Schumann’s ‘Märchenerzählungen’ to Jorg Widmann’s 2015 tour de force ‘Es war einmal…’ (‘Once upon a time…’), focuses on storytelling and fantasy, and this narrative element is reflected in many of the Trio’s programme offerings.
Their first concerts as Trio Meister Raro feature trio works by Mozart and Bruch, and take place at 3pm and 7pm today (Fri 23 September) at Sheffield’s Upper Chapel. The two performances feature the same programme, which also includes Eleanor Alberga’s ‘Duo from Dancing with the Shadow’ for clarinet and piano, and Henri Vieuxtemps’s stunning ‘Capriccio Hommage à Paganini’ for solo viola.
