Rachel Roberts introduces ‘Three Goddesses’

Violist Rachel Roberts is featured in a new video about her world premiere recording of a new concerto by Edward Gregson.

Described as “fully attuned” by Gramophone Magazine, Rachel’s performance of Gregson’s Three Goddesses appears on a new album from Chandos, ‘A Vision in a Dream’, recorded with the BBC Philharmonic and Ben Gernon. In the video, Rachel speaks about the work, which was written for her and premiered at the Presteigne Festival in 2023.

In this interview, Gregson says that Rachel is “such a wonderful viola player, such a wonderful musician, that I wanted to write her a concerto.” Speaking over exerpts of her performance of the work, Rachel reflects that “it’s just one of those pieces where you can really let go… it’s got a real sense of compelling fate – it’s just great fun to play.”

Respected internationally as a soloist and chamber musician, Rachel has performed concertos with the Philharmonia Orchestra, Koln Kammerorchester, Kammerphilharmonie Graubunden in Switzerland and the Manchester Camerata Chamber Orchestra, amongst others. This album is the latest addition to Rachel’s critically-acclaimed discography, which includes two solo CDs with the late Lars Vogt, chamber music recordings for Hyperion, Champs Hill Records, Signum Classics, cAVI, Deutsche Rundfunk, Orchid Classics and BIS Records, and a recording of Schubert’s String Quintet in C major, D. 956 with Christian Tetzlaff and friends on Alpha Classics.
