An album from the Gould Piano Trio’s extensive discography was featured on the ‘Building a Library’ segment of BBC Radio 3’s Record Review this weekend.
Chosen from hundreds of available recordings of Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio no. 1 in D minor, op. 49, the Gould Piano Trio’s 2002 version was amongst the recommendations of writer and broadcaster Katy Hamilton in Saturday’s edition of the programme, which highlights outstanding recordings of a given work. One of the great piano trios working today, the Gould Piano Trio has been compared in the Washington Post to the great Beaux Arts Trio for their “musical fire” and “dedication to the genre” and has remained at the forefront of the international chamber music scene for over a quarter of a century.
In conversation with presenter Andrew McGregor, Hamilton described being “obsessed” with their recording as a teenager, prior to learning to play the piece herself. “I just feel that they are so good at the pacing here that I couldn’t not include it”, she remarked, going on to say that “there is something about the delicacy and grit in combination in this recording” that makes it an enduring interpretation.
The programme may be heard by following this link, with the segment featuring the Trio beginning at 1:10:37. The episode will be available 28 days after its initial broadcast.
Released by Naxos, this recording is available to listen to on Spotify and Apple Music on an album that also includes Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio no. 2 in C minor, op. 66. To further explore the Gould Piano Trio’s extensive discography, please click here.
