Gould Piano Trio to release new Schubert album

The Gould Piano Trio will release their second volume of Schubert piano trios on Resonus early in the new year, completing their cycle of the composer’s works in the genre.

This album follows the success of their first volume in the cycle, also on Resonus, which was released in 2021. Gramophone praised their “faultless performances” and “unanimity of approach”, while The Strad found their account of Schubert’s Piano Trio no. 1 “spontaneous, unforced and imaginative”.

In both volumes, the Trio places Schubert’s piano trios alongside skilful arrangements of the composer’s dances by Carl Zellner and Brian Newbould. In their four-star review of the first volume, BBC Music Magazine wrote that the project “offers a welcome insight into Schubert’s musical world in the final years of his short life – small-scale and sociable, private and profoundly expressive.” Volume two combines Schubert’s Piano Trios in E flat major, op. 100, D. 929 and in B flat major, D. 28, Sonatensatz with a selection of Schubert’s dances arranged for piano trio by Brian Newbould, ‘Brian’s Bouquet’.

Respected internationally, the Gould Piano Trio have performed the complete works of Schubert at Wigmore Hall. Their discography includes releases on Naxos, Chandos, Somm, Resonus, NMC and Champs Hill, of both the standard repertoire and long neglected gems from late romantic British repertoire.

Ahead of the release of their new album, the Trio will appear on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ on 21st January.
