Ensemble 360 and Claire Booth, who have forged a dynamic partnership through their performances of Schoenberg's Pierrot Lunaire together, now turn their attention to Berio's quirky and intriguing Folk Songs in the composer's centenary year. Indeed, folk influences pervade the whole programme, from Rebecca Clarke's pastoral-tinged duo for clarinet and viola and Katherine Hoover’s evocation of the Hopi people to Ravel's sultry, sun-drenched pictures of Madagascar.
A preconcert thread of Berio Sequenzas sets the scene…..
Join members of Ensemble 360 in the Carne Foyer at 6pm for a pre-concert performance of Luciano Berio's Sequenzas:

Come and join the Tippett Quartet for a wonderful season finale exploring the Golden Age of cinema past and present.
They bring their unique recording experience and expertise to celebrate the incredible genius of Bernard Herrmann, who died 50 years ago this month, with his Clarinet Quintet and their bespoke arrangement of the infamous “Psycho” film score alongside the iconic sounds of Korngold, Rózsa and Jerome Kern. It promises to tell a story of sound, colour, lush harmonies and striking melodies. They will also feature a brand new arrangement of Gershwin’s Three Preludes by Callum Au and being the featured quartet in the Knives Out films, they will perform these pieces for the first time in concert bringing us right up to date!
The quartet will be joined by star clarinetist Robert Plane. A Gramophone Award winner and passionate advocate for British clarinet music, Robert has enjoyed a distinguished solo, chamber and orchestral career, performing worldwide, premiering major new works and serving as Head of Woodwind Performance at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama.

Festival Curtain Raiser

For the End of Time
Messiaen Quartet for the End of Time The Gould Trio and Robert Plane have been playing Messiaen’s monumental quartet together for over thirty years. Don’t miss this opportunity to marvel at Messiaen’s kaleidoscopic creation, today enhanced by the words of one of its most ardent admirers, poet Michael Simmons Roberts.
Olivier Messiaen: Quartet for the End of Time
Under Nordic Skies
We travel north to explore the music and the folk traditions of Scandinavia with the evocative strains of the Hardanger fiddle and a selection of Danish folk tunes, as arranged by the Danish String Quartet. These sit alongside lesser-known works from the classical tradition in this night under the Northern Lights.

Weber was renowned for his mastery of German Romantic Opera, and the clarinettist certainly gets to play the diva in his ebullient quintet. Ravel’s enchanting set of fairy tales sets the scene.

Carl Maria von Weber: Clarinet Quintet, op.34
Flute Focus
Tarantelle Op.6 We shine the spotlight on the flute in this programme, in a youthful Beethoven trio, Messiaen's evocation of a blackbird’s vocal prowess, and dancing alongside a clarinet in Saint-Saens’ cure for a scorpion’s bite.
Ludwig van Beethoven: Serenade op. 25
Rebecca Clarke: Prelude, Allegro and Pastorale
Olivier Messiaen: Le Merle Noir
Camille Saint-Saëns: Tarantelle, op. 6
Festival Finale
The sound of the cimbalom brings extra Eastern European spice to our closing concert. Hungarian composer György Kurtág celebrated his 100th birthday this February, and his Tre Pezzi are typical of his evocative work. But Debussy also fell for the cimbalom's quirky charm! The Gould Trio complete their Schumann cycle, and Tchaikovsky finally sends us away bathed in Tuscan sunshine.
