Conductor George Vass is pleased to announce the programme for the 44th annual Presteigne Festival, of which he serves as Artistic Director.
Each year, the Presteigne Festival welcomes audiences to Radnorshire for five days of music performed by outstanding artists from the UK and beyond. Under George’s directorship, the festival has become particularly well-known for its commitment to programming contemporary works, as well as for its support of emerging artists. His tireless work in this area led to George receiving the RPS Leslie Booth Award in 2025, given in recognition for his services to those who work ‘backstage’ to champion new music.
This year’s festival takes place this year from 27th – 31st August, and is characteristic of George’s exemplary programming and directorship. The artistry of women composers from the 20th and 21st centuries is celebrated, and significant anniversaries of composers Cecilia McDowall and Sally Beamish will be honoured with performances of their works. Music by Dutch composer Mathilde Wantenaar will be spotlighted, and composer-in-residence Michael Zev Gordon will be featured throughout the festival’s programme. Classic chamber and orchestral works find their place alongside music by some of today’s leading composers, and Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale will be performed by the Presteigne Festival Orchestra under George’s baton, in a semi-staged production directed by Ruth Evans.
The festival’s concert programmes will be interspersed by complimentary events including film screenings, talks and poetry readings, opportunities to explore the surrounding nature, family musical events and Presteigne Open Studios, which gives a platform to the work of local artists and craftspeople.
