Longstanding collaborators Robert Plane and the Gould Piano Trio look forward to performing at the Newcastle Chamber Music Society next month.
Britain’s oldest chamber music series, the Newcastle Chamber Music Society presents six concerts annually. The Society’s concerts take place in Sage Two at The Glasshouse International Centre for Music, one of the UK’s leading arts venues, and Robert Plane and the Gould Piano Trio open this year’s series with their concert on 4th October at 7pm.
Initially brought together in performances of Messiaen’s monumental Quartet for the End of Time, Plane and the Trio have given countless performances over the years, particularly in 2008, the centenary of Messiaen’s birth, when they also made their CD recording for Chandos, hailed by BBC Music Magazine as the ‘finest modern recording’ of this epic masterpiece, and garnering acclaim across the press. Together, they serve as artistic directors of the annual Corbridge Chamber Music Festival in Northumberland, which celebrated its 21st anniversary with a highly-acclaimed new commission from Huw Watkins for clarinet and piano trio entitled Four Fables.
The concert on 4th October opens with Schubert’s Piano Trio in B flat major, D. 28, Sonatensatz, followed by Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie. Two works by Piers Hellawell, a composer that the ensemble has championed, form the centrepiece of the programme – Up by the Roots, with poet and narrator Sinéad Morrissey is followed by The Rising of Sirius. To close, the Trio will perform Beethoven’s Piano Trio in D Major, op. 70, no. 1, Ghost.
