Louise Thomson (harp)
A journey through silence, sound, nature and transformation
The idea of “between” lies at the heart of this programme.
The Space Between explores the invisible worlds that exist between moments, where sound becomes silence, landscape becomes memory, and tradition becomes transformation.
The programme traces the harp’s journey across time: from the elegance and clarity of Boieldieu’s classical world to the visionary contemporary voice of Caroline Lizotte, revealing the space between past and future.
Through Godefroid’s Danse des Sylphes, The Lark, and Smetana’s The Moldau, the harp becomes a voice of nature, moving between earth and sky, from the elemental beauty of landscape and water to the imagination and freedom of flight.
Liszt’s Sospiri leads us into a more intimate space: the place between human longing and spiritual elevation. This journey culminates in Caroline Lizotte’s La Madone — a work of mystery, ritual and emotional depth.
At the heart of the harp lies another kind of space: the space between the notes. The instrument’s unique magic is found not only in the sound itself, but in everything that surrounds it, the resonance, colour, decay and silence that shape each phrase.
The Space Between celebrates the harp not simply as an instrument of beauty, but as a voice of connection: between generations, between traditions, and between what has come before and what is yet to come.
