Richard Blackford’s Seven Hokusai Miniatures were composed for the Solem Quartet in 2018, and premiered at the 2018 MusicFest Aberystwyth, and has since been recorded for Nimbus. As the title suggests, these imaginative and evocative movements are based on various paintings of the Japanese master artist Katsushika Hokusai; the quartet like to present this work with a slideshow of the paintings which inspired each piece, taking the audience on a journey into the world of Hokusai.
Paired with Blackford’s contemporary work are two quartets of Beethoven. The first, op 18/3 is full of compelling lyricism and bursts of energy, while op 59/3 from his Middle Period, is reflective of his heroic writing of that time – its fugal final movement ends this programme with joyous celebration.
Seven Hokusai Miniatures is also offered as part of a one hour programme, paired with Beethoven op/59, no 3.
