Wihan Quartet on BBC Radio 3 ‘In Tune’

The Wihan Quartet will appear on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ later this month to talk about a performance at Wigmore Hall that celebrates one of their biggest supporters and the Czech composers whose works are at the heart of their repertoire.

On Monday 24th June,  BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ welcomes the Wihan Quartet, who will talk with host Katie Derham about their concert later that evening at Wigmore Hall.

This concert celebrates a milestone birthday of one of their most fervent supporters, Simon Majaro, the London-based philanthropist and founder of the Cavatina Chamber Music Trust who, along with his late wife Pamela, has championed the quartet since their triumphant win at the 1991 London International String Quartet Competition. The concert also marks the ‘Year of Czech Music 2024’, which honours the legacy of Czech musicians every ten years, and this year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Bedřich Smetana.

Performing live on air, the Wihan Quartet will play the second movement of Smetana’s Quartet no. 2 in D minor and Schubert’s Quartettsatz in C minor, D. 703.

The programme begins at 5pm, and will be available to listen to shortly after broadcast for 30 days via this link.

The Wihan Quartet’s programme at Wigmore Hall on 24th June features Bedřich Smetana’s Quartet no. 2 in D minor, Dvořák’s Quartet no. 12 in F major, op. 96, B. 179, American, and Janáček’s String Quartet no. 2, Intimate Letters. The quartet will also perform Haydn’s Quartets in C op. 76, no. 3 The Emperor and op. 64, no. 5, The Lark at Wigmore Hall in a morning concert the day prior.
