‘Welcome Joy’ is BBC Radio 3 Essential Classics’ Album of the Week.

Corvus Consort and Louise Thomson’s new album ‘Welcome Joy’, a celebration of women’s voices, is featured on BBC Radio 3’s Essential Classics as their Album of the Week.

Listeners to this morning’s edition of BBC Radio 3’s Essential Classics were introduced to ‘Welcome Joy’, released by Chandos last month. Presenter Ian Skelly selected the recording as his Album of the Week, choosing Gustav Holst’s Hymn to the Dawn to share with today’s listeners.

Skelly invited the audience to tune in each day this week to hear more tracks from the album, which features music by Imogen Holst, Elizabeth Poston, Indian-American composer Shruthi Rajasekar and living female composers Judith Weir, Hilary Campbell, Gemma McGregor and Olivia Sparkhall.

The programme is available to listen to on BBC Sounds via this link, with the segment featuring this album beginning at 2:59. Tomorrow’s episode will air at 9:30am, and each programme will remain online for 29 days following its broadcast.

Since its release, ‘Welcome Joy’ has attracted enthusiastic reviews across the press. The British Music Society called it “excellent”, praising the ensemble’s “ideal vocal balance”, while Limelight Magazine selected the album as Editor’s Choice for November 2024. Full details about the album, including reviews and streaming links, may be found here.
