The Solem Quartet will appear at Stour Valley Arts and Music later this month in a programme that features the world premiere of a new work by Errollyn Wallen, commissioned by Shiry Rashkovksy.
In their concert presented by Stour Valley Arts and Music, the Solem Quartet look forward to performing Leos Janáček’s String Quartet no. 1, Kreutzer, composed in 1923 and inspired by Leo Tolstoy’s novella The Kreutzer Sonata.
The Quartet will be joined by violist Shiry Rashkovksy to perform Felix Mendelssohn’s String Quintet no. 1 in A major, op. 18, and for the world premiere of Belize-born British composer Errollyn Wallen’s new String Quintet, ‘LENCTEN’
Wallen (b. 1958) describes ‘a vision of contemporary classical music that was fun and joyous’ in her recently-published memoir ‘Becoming a Composer’. Her music has many influences, including avant-garde classical composition and popular songwriting, and has been performed by leading artists and ensembles around the world.
Praised for their “immaculate precision and spirit” (The Strad) and “cultured tone” (Arts Desk), the Solem Quartet established itself as one of the most innovative and adventurous quartets of its generation. They have commissioned new works by composers such as Aaron Parker, Jasmine Morris, David John Roche, Ayanna Witter-Johnson, Edmund Finnis and Bushra El-Turk, and have also worked closely with many of today’s leading composers, including Anna Meredith, Colin Matthews and Thomas Adès, and in 2021 gave the UK premiere of Jonny Greenwood’s Quartet Suite from “There Will be Blood” at the V&A Museum.
The concert will take place on 17th March 2024 at 4pm at Stratford St. Mary Parish Church. Tickets and more information may be found by following this link.
