Solem Quartet to give UK premiere at V&A Museum

On Sunday 27th June, the Solem Quartet will perform twice at the V&A Museum as part of the weekend-long series of Glastonbury Pastoral Concerts.

The Quartet will appear at 11am and 1pm on Sunday, performing Cassandra Miller’s Warblework as well as the UK premiere of Jonny Greenwood’s Suite from There Will Be Blood.

The concerts will be open to all as free drop-in events.

Staged in the V&A’s iconic Raphael Gallery, Glastonbury Pastoral Concerts is a series of concerts is inspired by Glastonbury’s rich history and landscape, curated by conductor Oliver Zeffman. This series is part of the museum’s larger celebration, The Glastonbury Weekender, exploring the legacy and impact of the Festival with a dynamic programme of free events responding to the Festival archive.

Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood’s soundtrack for the 2007 film ‘There Will Be Blood’, starring Daniel Day Lewis, received a Special Artistic Contribution Award at the 2008 Berlin International Film Festival and was also nominated for a Grammy award. The Solem Quartet is thrilled to be giving the UK premiere of Greenwood’s Suite based on movements from the soundtrack, in its string quartet version.

The Quartet will also play Warblework by Canadian composer Cassandra Miller. After a first movement based on a melody by Canadian fiddler Zav RT, the remaining three movements are all based on birdsong, in particular the songs of three different thrushes. Miller describes the work as “something of a poem to the regional sounds of the Pacific coast, of both the cafés and the forests”. Warblework will also feature on the Solem Quartet’s upcoming disc on the Orchid Classics label.
