Tune in to BBC Radio 3 at 1pm tomorrow (Friday 15th April) to hear the Solem Quartet on BBC Radio 3’s ‘Lunchtime Concert’ programme, in the broadcast of their recent performance at Perth Concert Hall.
Joining forces with clarinettist Mark Simpson, their concert was part of the venue’s ‘Mostly Mozart’ series and featured the composer’s beautiful Clarinet Quintet, as well as the Solems’ own string-quartet arrangement of Clara Schumann’s Three Romances.
The concert, recorded live by Radio 3, took place on Tuesday 15th March. Mark and the Solems also enjoyed performing the Mozart Quintet together again the following week at Liverpool’s brand new Tung Auditorium, as part of the Quartet’s residency at the University of Liverpool.
Mark Simpson is one of the UK’s leading clarinettists, well-known for his world-class renditions of Mozart’s clarinet works — The Herald Tribune praised one of his recent performances of the Quintet as “never more beautifully done than in this performance… [his] honeyed tone wove weightlessly in amongst them… his sound was velvety at the bottom and his control seemed effortless. Classy stuff.”.
After Friday’s broadcast the concert will be available to listen again via this link.
There’s also still time to listen to the Solems’ appearance on BBC Radio 3’s ‘In Tune’ earlier this week, which featured music by Felix Mendelssohn, Cassandra Miller and Clara Schumann. Click here to hear the programme again, where it will be available until 12th May.
