Robin Browning becomes Professor of Conducting at the British Army

Robin Browning begins a new role as Professor of Conducting with the British Army from the start of 2022, in addition to his established role as Specialist Conducting Teacher at University of Southampton.

He will be working intensively with a cohort of students, all destined to go on to roles as conductors, bandmasters and – finally – Directors of Music with one of the Royal Corps of Army Music bands.

This marks a significant step in Robin’s work as a conducting teacher, having already nurtured the early careers of multiple conductors for many years in his role as Specialist Tutor in Conducting at the University of Southampton, one of the UK’s top-rated Music Departments. Many of his former pupils are now active in the profession, whether in front of orchestras, choirs, in musical theatre, or in youth music and education settings.

Robin has always been drawn to the world of training, coaching and human development, believing that conductors should always be accumulating knowledge, always growing and never stop learning. His work with the British Army will be a deepening and continuation of that spirit and belief.

Having been trained and mentored by some of the world’s greatest podium pedagogues – including Sir Charles Mackerras, Sian Edwards, Paavo Järvi, Benjamin Zander and the legendary Ilya Musin – Robin is perfectly placed to pass his knowledge onto the next generation of conductors.
