Robert Plane (clarinet) and the Sacconi Quartet – Malvern Concert Club

Robert Plane (clarinet) and the Sacconi Quartet continue their tour with  a concert for Malvern Concert Club on Thursday 26th January at 7.30pm.

Their programme showcases the multi-talented English composer and pianist York Bowen’s sublime Phantasy Quintet Op 93 for Bass Clarinet and strings, and Glazunov’s  Oriental Reverie for clarinet and strings, Op.14, which dreamily depicts the exotic nature of the East.

The concert closes with the Brahms Clarinet Quintet in B minor, Op.115. Often described as his most profound chamber work, this melancholy, autumnal piece contains a great depth of sadness which is never far from the surface, but at the same time is constantly energised by rhapsodic, wild gestures and flickering textures. This is particularly evident in the extraordinary “Gypsy” section in the middle of the slow movement.
