Rachel Roberts records with the BBC Philharmonic

Violist Rachel Roberts started the new year by recording a concerto dedicated to her with the BBC Philharmonic for Chandos Records.

Sir Edward Gregson’s Three Goddesses for viola and string orchestra was written for Rachel, having been commissioned by the Prestiegne Festival in 2023. The work conveys the natures of three mythical deities: ‘Morrigan’, the Celtic warrior queen, ‘Aphrodite’, Greek goddess of love and beauty, and ‘Diana’, Roman goddess of the hunt. In late 2024, its quality was recognised with a nomination for the 2024 Ivors Classical Awards in the category of Best Large Ensemble Composition. Sessions for Rachel’s recording of this important new work took place at the BBC’s state-of-the-art MediaCityUK in Salford Quays.

Known internationally as a soloist and chamber musician, Rachel is pleased to make this addition to her impressive discography, which includes two solo CDs, chamber music recordings for Hyperion, Champs Hill Records, Signum Classics, cAVI, Deutsche Rundfunk, Orchid Classics and BIS Records, and three Diapason d’O awards.

Rachel goes into 2025 with new publicity photos courtesy of photographer Ekaterina Kantur. She looks forward to a season that includes performances with Ensemble 360, Wigmore Soloists, Nash Ensemble and Trio Meister Raro, as well as an appearance at the festival Spannungen: Musik im Krafwerk Heimbach, directed by Christian Tetzlaff, with whom Rachel is a long-term collaborator.
