New proposals for saxophone and harp from the Wiggin–Wass Duo

Saxophone and harp duo Huw Wiggin and Oliver Wass present a set of three varied and attractive programmes for 2022-2024, featuring original works for saxophone and harp as well as arrangements of music written before the saxophone’s invention!

Described by Robert Hugill as “a seemingly unlikely combination that works real magic”, the Wiggin–Wass Duo was formed in 2016 and featured on Orchid Classics disc ‘Reflections’, which reached no. 2 in the UK Specialist Classical Chart and no. 6 in the iTunes Classical Chart. Shortly after the release, Huw and Oliver were also featured by Classic FM, who filmed and released a video containing a selection of items from ‘Reflections’.

Individually, Huw Wiggin and Oliver Wass have busy calendars as solo and chamber performers, and are well-known for their virtuosic and engaging performances. The Times has praised Huw’s “liquid gold sound”, while BBC Music Magazine lauded his “keen musical intelligence” and “remarkably beautiful sound”, going on to say that “Wiggin brings dazzling flair and imagination to his performance”. Oliver is the only harpist ever to win the Guildhall Gold Medal and, at his Wigmore Hall debut, Seen and Heard International reviewed his “tremendous dynamism” and “remarkable range of timbres and warmth of tone”.

The new programme proposals

Old and New — The saxophone was invented in the early 1840s, so all the original repertoire for the instrument has been written since then. In this programme you will hear Baroque works contrasted with contemporary works for saxophone and harp, including pieces by friends and colleagues of Huw and Oliver. Includes works by J. S. Bach, Béla Kovács, Oliver Leith and Andy Scott. Find out more…

Purely Baroque — This programme features Baroque works arranged for saxophone and harp. Audiences are often astounded at the subtlety and range of colour this combination of instruments brings to this much-loved repertoire, originally written for flute, violin, keyboard and cello. Includes works by Bach, Corelli and Scarlatti. Find out more…

A European Adventure — Huw and Oliver will take you on a journey around Europe in 90 minutes! This programme takes the audience through Germany, France, England, Hungary, Spain, and finally back to England with Andy Scott’s rhythmic and exciting Sonata for saxophone and harp. Includes works by J. S. Bach, Maurice Ravel, Francisco Tarrega and Barry Cockroft. Find out more…

These three programmes are all now available and being offered for bookings 2022-2024, and you can read more detailed information in the duo’s varied and attractive programmes.
