Simon Callaghan‘s newest upcoming CD will be a recording of Poulenc’s ‘The Story of Babar’, with stage and screen veteran Miriam Margolyes as narrator.
The original story, ‘Histoire de Babar, le petit éléphant’, was written in 1931 by Jean de Brunhoff, based on a story by his wife, Cécile. Poulenc completed his composition for piano and narrator in 1945, after first experimenting with piano improvisations around the stories to amuse his cousin’s granddaughter in 1940. The piece is in seven movements, and this recording uses English text, in a translation by Nelly Rieu.
The disc will be released on the Nimbus label on Friday 6th November.
