This concert marks Hiro’s virtual return to Pretoria’s Brooklyn Theatre, after he performed a complete cycle of Mozart Piano Sonatas there across three days as part of the Gauteng International Arts Festival in September 2019.
The streamed concert will go live Saturday 27th February at 7:30pm GMT, and will be available to ticket-holders for 3 days.
Hiro’s programme will last a little over half an hour with music by Mozart and Grieg. The first item is Mozart’s Fantasia in D minor, K.397, left unfinished at the composer’s death, and with the last 10 bars supposedly completed by August Eberhard Müller. Next comes Mozart’s Rondo in A minor, K. 511, a famously chromatic and brooding work, written just before Mozart started work on his opera Don Giovanni. The remaining bulk of the programme is occupied by Grieg’s Holberg Suite, op. 40, a series of five neoclassical dance movements composed to mark the 200th anniversary of the birth of 18th-century Danish-Norwegian playwright Ludvig Holberg. The suite has gained popularity in its version for string orchestra, re-worked by Grieg a year after this, his original work for solo piano.
