Hiroaki Takenouchi celebrates International Women’s Day

Pianist Hiroaki Takenouchi will appear in a recital as part of Kettner Concerts, curated especially to celebrate International Women’s Day 2024.

During International Women’s Week 2024, Tashmina artist Hiroaki Takenouchi will perform music by four British female composers as part of Kettner Concerts, whose series offers programmes that draw on the rich links of music with cultural, artistic, historical, and political subjects. The programme will feature Doreen Carwithen’s Four Preludes (1950), Madeline Dring’s Fantasy Sonata (1938), Dorothy Howell’s Boat Song (1922), Toccata (1922) and Three Preludes (1927), and Caroline Reinagle’s Tarantella in E minor (1846), Volunteer Rifle March (1860) and Sonata in A Op. 6 (1853). For this performance, Hiroaki will be joined by guest speaker Dr. Leah Broad, a music historian and author of Quartet: How Four Women Changed the Musical World whose current research is focused on women composers in twentieth century Britain, particularly on four composers including Dorothy Howell and Doreen Carwithen.

Alongside his love for the classical masters, Hiroaki is known for championing the music of lesser-known British composers, and has recorded music of Hélène de Montgeroult, Doreen Carwithen and Johanna Müller-Hermann amongst others, as part of BBC Radio 3’s initiative, the ‘Forgotten Women Composers Project’.

The concert takes place on Wednesday 6th March 2024 at 7pm at the National Liberal Club in London, and tickets are available here.

In the week prior to this performance, Lyrita Recorded Edition will release Hiroaki’s new recording Danza Gaya: Music for Two Pianos with Simon Callaghan, which features music by Dorothy Howell (1898-1982), Pamela Harrison (1915-90), and Madeleine Dring (1923-77). Two singles from the album, Madeleine Dring: Danza Gaya and Pamela Harrison: Dance Little Lady are available to stream now.
