The Solem Quartet’s film of ‘Both Sides Now’ by Joni Mitchell (arr. William Newell) has been selected by Gramophone Magazine as their Video of the Day.
To quote Gramophone Magazine:
“Listen to the Solem Quartet perform Both Sides Now ahead of the release of their latest album ‘Painted Light’ this Friday. The album, produced by Delphian Records, features works for string quartet that are ‘awash with colour’ – most are contemporary works by Edmund Finnis, Camden Reeves, Ayanna Witter-Johnson and Joni Mitchell which are complimented by early 20th century works by Henriëtta Bosmans and Lili Boulanger.”
“Both Sides Now by Canadian-American singer-songwriter Joni Mitchell appears here in an arrangement by William Newell (the quartet’s violin 2). It is more than just a direct arrangement; the already colourful harmonic language is met with pizzicato, double stops and a satisfying distribution of the melodic material across the quartet.”
