Gould Piano Trio celebrate Schubert anniversary in 2028

The Gould Piano Trio marks the bi-centenary of Schubert’s death in 2028 with a programme that places the Piano Trio no. 2 in E flat major, D. 929 alongside a specially commissioned companion piece from distinguished British composer Joseph Phibbs.

The Trio are delighted to bring the Piano Trio no. 2 into their programming for the anniversary, it having been in their repertoire for over thirty years. Their recording of the work appears on their recent release on the Resonus label, an album which concludes their recorded survey of Schubert’s works for piano trio.

Joseph Phibbs writes of his work, which is co-commissioned by the Trio and Wigmore Hall: “To mark the bicentenary of Schubert’s death, I’m delighted at the prospect of writing my first ever piano trio for the internationally acclaimed Gould Trio, scheduled to be performed at Wigmore Hall – and elsewhere – in 2028. In homage to Schubert, the work will allude to the composer’s great Piano Trio No.2 (with which it will be programmed), drawing on both its melodic and harmonic aspects to create a contemporary response to this mainstay of the classical repertoire.”

To offer presenters curatorial flexibility, the Trio have created a set of possible programmes that place the Piano Trio no. 2 and Joseph Phibbs’ work in dialogue with works by Hummel, Schubert or Beethoven, with the additional options of programmes built around the Trio no. 1 in B Flat major, D. 898, or a complete cycle of all of Schubert’s works for Piano Trio.
