Corvus Consort once again takes up residence at Devon’s Whiddon Autumn Festival, which takes place from 16th to 20th September.
Described by The Moorlander as “a delectable cocktail of youthful vitality, ambitious programming, topnotch musical integrity, and a breezy, easy-going amiability”, the Whiddon Autumn Festival brings world-class live music to a part of the country not ordinarily known for its live music scene. Directed by Dartmoor native Freddie Crowley, the festival platforms young professional artists in the formative stages of their careers, and works with the surrounding community to stage participatory events as well as learning and engagement opportunities for young people and their families.
This year’s festival will see concerts and other events take place across five villages in Dartmoor. Corvus Consort, of which Freddie serves as artistic director, will perform their new programme ‘Shared Ground’ in collaboration with violinist Fenella Humphreys, who will give two candlelight concerts to open the festival. Corvus will also offer a meditative choral compline, and a musical exploration of Shakespeare’s The Tempest. Their programme ‘All Creatures Now’ brings the animal kingdom to life through song, and features performances by young participants in the festival’s Learning and Engagement initiative. Members of the community are invited to attend an open rehearsal with Corvus as they work with composer-in-residence Kerensa Briggs on her newly commissioned piece for voices.
Guest artists baritone George Clark and indie-folk band Iris and Steel will give performances at this year’s festival, and Harry Baker returns for a late-night concert with trumpeter Laura Jurd. Author Julia Hollander will lead an uplifting singing workshop in collaboration with Chagford Community & Memory Café, and will host a Q&A and book signing event for her book Why We Sing. Singers of all levels are invited to a ‘come and sing’ event, and the festival’s resident artists will give concerts throughout the festival. ‘Songs of the Sea’ brings the festival to a close, and sees all of the festival’s resident artists come together to perform music inspired by the ocean.
Tickets are available to purchase through the festival’s website, and discounted tickets are available for those claiming Universal Credit, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Disability Benefit, Housing Benefit & Pension Credit as part of the festival’s commitment to their community.
