són, Browning’s new professional orchestra which launches at Turner Sims in Southampton this Sunday with ‘Sibelius Unwrapped’, has been granted permission by the family of Jean Sibelius to give the UK premiere of an early Sibelius work.
As part of their introduction to Sibelius’ music, són will perform the still-unpublished first version of the Impromptu for Strings, Sibelius’ orchestration of the Piano Impromptu Op. 5. Dating most probably from late 1893, the year after Elgar wrote his Serenade for Strings, this fascinating miniature features a decidedly Elgarian ostinato figure, which Sibelius later removed in his reworked version the following year. són and David Owen Norris will explore both versions alongside the original piano impromptu, during ‘Sibelius Unwrapped’ this Sunday at 3pm.
