Music in the Round’s Chief Executive, Jo Towler, reflects on the Sheffield Chamber Music Festival ahead of its 40th anniversary edition, including the contribution made by their resident musicians, Ensemble 360.
In an article for industry news site Classical Music, Music in the Round’s chief executive Jo Towler looks back on the evolution of the Sheffield Chamber Music Festival from its origins in 1984 to its place as one of the country’s most important festivals, with Tashmina artists Ensemble 360 at its core as resident artists.
Praising its ‘collaborative spirit’, Towler highlights not only the festival’s artistic calibre, but also the strength of its community partnerships, stressing that music is ‘integral to the city’s sense of pride.’
Looking ahead, Jo Towler anticipates the opening in 2027 of ‘Harmony Works’, a new hub for music education in Sheffield, which reflects the vibrancy of the city’s musical scene.

The 40th Sheffield Chamber Music Festival takes place from 17th – 25th May and is curated this year by cellist Steven Isserlis.
