    'Beethoven’s Ghost'
Krysia Osostowicz (violin), Linos Piano Trio: Prach Boondiskulchok (piano), Konrad Elias-Trostmann (violin), Vladimir Waltham (cello)

Beethoven’s little-known violin sonata in A, showing him at his most playful and subversive, precedes the famous “Ghost” piano trio whose eerie-sounding slow movement was reputedly inspired by a scene from Shakespeare’s Macbeth. This is revolutionary music, full of dramatic extremes, deep darkness and radiant light.

Beethoven – Violin sonata in A, op 12 no 2
Beethoven – Piano Trio in D, op 70 “The Ghost”

    'The Trout'
Linos Piano Trio with Krysia Osostowicz (viola); Jenna Sherry (violin), Alinka Rowe (viola), Eliza Millet (cello)

Schubert’s glorious quintet, maybe one of the most best-loved classics of all time, needs no introduction. But first, a little-known work by Mahler, his only piece of chamber music: intense and brooding in tone, acting as a sombre prelude to one of Schubert’s most joyful creations.

Mahler – Piano Quartet movement in A minor
Schubert – Quintet in A Major, “The Trout”

    'The Archduke'
Linos Piano Trio, Alinka Rowe (viola), Eliza Millet (cello)

First we hear a contemporary and highly approachable duet composed by virtuoso violist Garth Knox, full of folk rhythms and quirky harmonies. Then another of Beethoven’s most celebrated works, dedicated to his great friend and patron Archduke Rudolph of Austria. Although Beethoven gave the first performance of the trio, his encroaching deafness prevented him from ever playing the piano in public again. The music, sunny and majestic in tone, betrays nothing of his struggle with this devastating illness.

Garth Knox – Pocket Concerto for viola and cello
Beethoven – Piano Trio in E Flat, op 97 “The Archduke”

    'Bach & Sons'
Krysia Osostowicz, Jenna Sherry (violins); Linos Piano Trio

Johann Sebastian Bach can be considered the father of Western classical music; he also fathered 20 children, several of whom became composers. Alongside Bach Senior, we will enjoy the music of three of his sons including Carl Phillip Emanuel, whose amazingly inventive piano trios have just been recorded for the first time by the Linos Piano Trio. The trio’s pianist, Prach Boondiskulchok, contributes to the fun with his own set of “Inventions” inspired by JS Bach and composed during Lockdown.

JS Bach - Partita in E for solo violin
JC Bach - 3 violin duets
WF Bach - Fantasie for piano solo
    P Boondiskulchok - 3 Inventions
CPE Bach - Piano trio in E minor

  • Simonsbath Festival: Somerset

Corvus Consort (choir) and Music on the Edge (Flute and Saxophone)

The Corvus Consort presents an improvisatory exploration of Renaissance soundworlds in collaboration with Music on the Edge.

At the centre of the programme sits a selection of vocal music by some of Renaissance Europe’s most masterful composers, which will be extended and embellished by the saxophone and flute of Chris Caldwell and Susie Hodder-Williams of Music on the Edge. The harmonic language of the Renaissance lends itself effortlessly to a treatment of improvisation and experimentation that casts this music in a fresh and emotionally-heightened light.

In addition, medieval plainchant will feature as a starting point for both voices and instruments as part of improvisatory episodes that will begin and end the concert. The programme will also incorporate Renaissance choral works performed by the Corvus Consort alone.

Rachel Podger (violin) and the Corvus Consort (vocal ensemble)

‘Music from the Bach Family’ – featuring performances by the world-renowned violinist Rachel Podger and by the sixteen voices of Corvus Consort

Sumptuous choral music and virtuosic solo violin combine in a beautiful setting to showcase the incredible musicality of the extensive Bach family. This concert offers a rare opportunity to hear world-renowned violinist Rachel Podger (frequently heard on BBC Radio 3 and across the world) perform a complete Partita and Sonata by J. S. Bach, widely regarded as the greatest music ever written for solo violin.

“There is probably no more inspirational musician working today than Podger”
    Gramophone Magazine
“The Corvus Consort is a marvel: glorious voices, expressive singing, highly creative and imaginative programming, inspired direction!”
Simon Carrington, founder member of The King’s Singers

Taking full advantage of the glorious acoustic of St. Mary’s Church, Rachel Podger (the globally-recognised interpreter of music from the late Baroque era) performs two of Bach’s greatest works for solo violin. Both the Sonata No. 1 and Partita No. 3 showcase Bach’s masterful writing for the violin, with meticulously-constructed lines carving out soaring melodies and eloquent harmonies.
These spellbinding performances are each bookended with beautiful choral music by J. S. Bach and other members of his highly-musical family, sung by the sixteen glorious voices of the Corvus Consort, directed by Freddie Crowley. Featuring J. S. Bach’s most famous choral motet Jesu, meine Freude, a long-standing favourite with audiences worldwide, the programme also includes lesser-known works by his brilliantly-talented older cousins Johann Michael and Johann Christoph, including the heartrendingly beautiful Herr, ich warte auf dein Heil.

    Louise Thomson (harp)

Festival Director Freddie Crowley conducts Ensemble-in-Residence the Corvus Consort in a fascinating exploration of composers' responses to the poetry of 17th-century English metaphysical poet George Herbert (1593-1633).

Through a sumptuous selection of choral music by Judith Weir, Alec Roth, Roxanna Panufnik and James MacMillan, the musicians reveal how George Herbert's words have provided inspiration to a whole generation of composers.

Finally, the Corvus Consort is joined by baritone soloist George Clark, Harry Baker (piano), Louise Thomson (harp) and the Festival String Quartet, to perform perhaps the most famous setting of Herbert's poetry: Ralph Vaughan Williams's magnificent Five Mystical Songs.
