Sleeping at Last, Solem Quartet and cellist/composer Philip Sheppard
Sleeping At Last, the stage moniker of Chicago-based singer, producer and composer Ryan O’Neal, has captivated worldwide listeners for the past 12 years with its enchanting and emotive sound.
O’Neal is known for his ability to craft introspective and cinematic compositions, which have featured in films and series including The Fault in Our Stars, The Twilight Saga and Grey’s Anatomy.
Over the last decade, O’Neal has released three full-length albums, performed with the likes of Alanis Morissette and Christina Perri, scored the feature documentary film Many Beautiful Things, and recorded a podcast in which he explains the process and inspiration behind his music, one song at a time.
In this performance, he shares music from his Atlas project, which has spanned the past 11 years and seen him release an ongoing series of EPs and garner a loyal following.

Back by popular demand! The wind players of Ensemble 360 will perform a selection of music to accompany the rising sun, alongside the dawn chorus of singing birds. The Abbeydale Singers perform Cantique de Jean Racine, one of Gabriel Fauré’s most popular works, loved for its beautifully restrained nature and gorgeous harmonies. They are joined by Ensemble 360 for Fauré’s Mass, rarely performed in its entirety, composed in collaboration with his lifelong friend, André Messager, in honour of fishermen from the tiny Normandy village of Villerville.
Organist Darius Battiwalla plays César Franck’s mesmerising Prelude, Fugue and Variation before singers Anna Huntley and Ella Taylor, rising stars of the opera and concert stage, join Ensemble 360, Louise Thomson and Abbeydale Singers for the shimmering sounds of the Queen’s Vision by the Irish-French composer Augusta Holmès.

Music in the Round is delighted to welcome Robin Ireland back to the Crucible, a venue he knows so well from his years as violist with the Lindsay String Quartet.
Robin will join Ensemble 360 for one of Mozart’s finest chamber works, his String Quintet in G minor. It’s a work that’s rich in drama, the hallmark of one of the greatest opera composers, and a delicate aria from Mozart’s The Magic Flute will lead straight into the Quintet.
Schubert’s Second Piano Trio was one of the final pieces he completed before his death at the young age of 31. It’s a work of incredible emotional depth, with its most famous melody, frequently used in soundtracks for film and television, inspired by a traditional Swedish folksong.

The Carnival of the Animals
Camille Saint-Saëns’ most celebrated work, ‘The Carnival of the Animals’ is a work unlike any other, transporting the listener into a musical menagerie that includes a swan, a tortoise, lions and a plunge into a truly magical aquarium. It is presented here alongside rarely performed pieces including ‘Les odeurs de Paris’, a musical riot, with the addition of trumpets and children’s toys to convey the many smells of Paris. Early French film The Assassination of the Duke of Guise is one of the very first to feature an original film score. Written by Saint-Saëns, the music will be performed live alongside a screening of the film in a celebration of the beloved French composer.

Musical national treasure Roderick Williams, soloist at King Charles III’s Coronation and Singer-in-Residence with Music in the Round, returns to the Crucible Playhouse with Ensemble 360 for a magical tour through the City of Light.
Fauré’s first Piano Quintet was a labour of love that he nurtured over many years, and the song cycles and works for violin he wrote alongside it echo through this exquisitely constructed piece.
Poulenc’s kaleidoscopic sextet encompasses jazz, ragtime, pastiche of Mozart and a tribute to Ravel, whose ‘Madagascan’ songs they follow, in this programme luxuriating in the many sounds of fin de siècle Paris.
Culminating in Fauré’s intricate song-cycle, crafted from the poems of Paul Verlaine, this concert reunites Ensemble 360, with Music in the Round’s singer-in-residence Roderick Williams for the first time since 2017.

A grand work for a grand finale: captivating charm and wit from George Onslow’s Nonet. Nicknamed the ‘French Beethoven’, this is a chance to hear one of his finest and largest-scale chamber works whose five movements move through an expressive array of moods from turbulence to a jubilant conclusion.
Steven Isserlis then joins pianist Tim Horton for a heartfelt lament by Gabriel Fauré, before we sign off with Tchaikovsky’s celebratory musical postcard, Souvenir de Florence. This hugely popular string sextet by the great Russian composer features both Steven Isserlis and Ensemble 360’s cellist Gemma Rosefield, and promises to be a fitting farewell to the Festival in our anniversary year.

Our festival finale opens with one of Boccherini’s many string quintets (there are over a hundred!), a particularly vocal example which draws upon influences as diverse as Italian Opera and Spanish Fandango. We then draw together some of the threads of the 2024 Corbridge Festival, with Pierrot’s escapades graphically depicted by Thea Musgrave, and a final reminder of JP Joffre’s astonishing bandoneon playing in that classic of ‘Nuevo Tango’, Piazzolla’s ‘Libertango’. ‘I can’t tell you how moved I am by it, and powerfully gripped’ wrote Clara Schumann of Brahms’ Piano Quintet Op.34. Widely regarded as the jewel in the crown of Brahms' chamber works, what better way to bring the 2024 Corbridge Chamber Music Festival to a rousing end?

Nannette tells the life story of Nannette Streicher, who became one of the most famous piano makers of her time thanks to her skill and ability as an engineer and businesswoman. The piece also honours the influence she had on the music of one of the most important composers of the Classical and Romantic periods: Ludwig van Beethoven.

When it comes to songs, we think directly of the lyrics. But if there is no text, an infinite number of new possible meanings arise for the song. The famous songs without words by Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn express this through their extremely sensitive and melodic musical language. With their songs, the Mendelssohn siblings offer the audience a unique, personal approach to music and an insight into their relationship with each other in a similar yet very different way.

Jasdeep Singh Degun is one of the finest exponents of the sitar and one of the most exciting musicians working today. His many collaborations with players from both Indian and western classical traditions have earned him broad audiences and many prizes, including two prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society awards in 2024. Following his sold-out Playhouse debut with tabla player Harkiret Singh Bahra in spring 2024, he returns for a new collaboration with the string players of Ensemble 360 to mark their 20th birthday.

Eroica (or Heroic)
The "heroic" topic was prevalent around 1800 as Europe was entangled in the Napoleonic wars.
Beethoven's 3rd Symphony has come to be a flag bearer of this movement in music. In the same key of E-flat, we hear echoes of the revolutionary sentiments in both Op. 1/1 and Op. 70/2.

Haydn famously didn't like Beethoven's extreme dramatic style in Op. 1/3, but we trace the opening theme back to Haydn's own String Quartet. The "storm" topic continues to inspire Beethoven to experiment with cloudy sounds in the Ghost trio.

Not an immediate image of Beethoven in the popular imagination, but he was a master of juxtaposing the sacred and the profane. Often letting the profane and humour have the last words, as is the case in his culminating final piano trio Op. 97 that was the last piece he performed in public.
