Boulanger Deux Pièces en trio

Join Birdfoot and the Linos Piano Trio to discover the music and musical universe of composer Lili Boulanger. Boulanger was only twenty-four years old when she wrote D’un matin de printemps and D’un soir triste, two trios evoking the contrasting energies of two times of day, morning and evening.

Simultaneously, she was experiencing her own dawn and dusk: as the first woman to win the prestigious Prix de Rome, she was emerging as a formidable musical voice; she was also suffering from a chronic intestinal illness which took her life later in the same year. Tragic as her early death was, her music remains powerfully alive. These two trios are fresh with new energy, while possessing a sense of perspective usually associated with “late” works. Her music stands alongside masterpieces by Debussy and Fauré in ambition, evocativeness, and originality.

Both D’un matin de printemps and D’un soir triste are built around the same few notes, but like a painter capturing the same scene in different lights, Boulanger uses colorful harmonies to capture two gripping, but entirely different emotional moments.

An engineer who builds pianos in the 19th century. Nannette tells the life story of Nannette Streicher, who became one of the most famous piano makers of her time thanks to her skill and ability as an engineer and businesswoman. The piece also honours the influence she had on the music of one of the most important composers of the Classical and Romantic periods: Ludwig van Beethoven.

When it comes to songs, we think directly of the lyrics. But if there is no text, an infinite number of new possible meanings arise for the song. The famous songs without words by Fanny and Felix Mendelssohn express this through their extremely sensitive and melodic musical language. With their songs, the Mendelssohn siblings offer the audience a unique, personal approach to music and an insight into their relationship with each other in a similar yet very different way.

Eroica (or Heroic)
The "heroic" topic was prevalent around 1800 as Europe was entangled in the Napoleonic wars.
Beethoven's 3rd Symphony has come to be a flag bearer of this movement in music. In the same key of E-flat, we hear echoes of the revolutionary sentiments in both Op. 1/1 and Op. 70/2.

Pre-concert talk

In 2024-2025, the Linos Piano Trio recorded the complete Beethoven Trios on three different historical instruments, tracing the technological changes throughout the composer's life.
The trio will discuss how its interpretation of these works have transformed in the process, and how the cycle at Leiden Stadsgehoorzaal takes a further step of combining the original works with various symphonic transcriptions.

Sturm und Drang

Haydn famously didn't like Beethoven's extreme dramatic style in Op. 1/3, but we trace the opening theme back to Haydn's own String Quartet. The "storm" topic continues to inspire Beethoven to experiment with cloudy sounds in the Ghost trio.

Sacred and Profane

Not an immediate image of Beethoven in the popular imagination, but he was a master of juxtaposing the sacred and the profane. Often letting the profane and humour have the last words, as is the case in his culminating final piano trio Op. 97 that was the last piece he performed in public.
